Socialist America?

by Jerry Edmon

The word “Socialism” has been thrown around a lot during this last Presidential cycle. So that it is not just rhetoric from the right or left, we should employ the use of the dictionary to help us define the current position of this Administration.

      Socialism

      Pronunciation:

      'so-sh?-?li-z?m

      Function:

      Noun

      Date:

      1837

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods

2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property

b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state.

    3
: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done.

Carl Marx said, “From each according to his supply, to each according to his need”. The controlling hand of government is the only entity that can make that happen. Put simply, it is Socialism. Socialism can only be carried out by a government that is completely interwoven into the fabric of every decision that its people make. The strength of Socialism is ownership and control.

While I don’t live by the “Chicken Little” philosophy for life, if something falls on my head I will at least look up. Do I believe that the Obama administration is Socialist? They tell us that they are not, but they certainly have the intellectual framework to facilitate the Socialist doctrine. It is not a long walk.

Here is the problem that I see. Socialism does not understand the flaws of human nature and assumes that everyone is willing to participate and contribute. Of course they won’t so all they can do is to penalize those who are responsible and hard working and make them carry the load for those who aren’t. That is going to take a lot of money.

Where are they going to get that money? Taxation. The rich has been the target so far but that is not the big target. This will have two phases. First will be the state ownership, control and production of business. And the second will be against the church. The venom of the radical left against the church over the last few years is designed to weaken the position the church and its non profit status. I assure you that money from the church will be the next focus for revenue.

Do we need government controls? Of course we do. I am not opposed to stiff government control to provide leadership at the beginning of a project or program. I realize that things may for a short time need to be controlled with a strong arm, but we must wean ourselves from government control. No legislation should be open-ended. Our goal should always be to downgrade the grip of government from our lives.
