Buffet Church

by Jean Grantham

We went to a restaurant this week with long tables that held green lettuce on one end to seasoned Meat Loaf at the other.  You know it, a “Buffet/All You Can Eat” establishment.  I walked seemingly a country mile around the rainbow of colored food for my choosing.  I carefully and methodically picked and chose while talking to myself (“Too many calories, too spicy, too sour, wow, what is that?”)  But I chose.

It was good, but one day I will forget that food and how it tasted.  So, what made the meal and the day?  It was the fellowship I had with family and friends at the table.  It was laughing “with” and “at” each other that soaked up the air in the room.  It was looking in the eyes of family and feeling the tears cloud my vision as I realized how much I cared for them and remembering the history we’ve had.

And it made me think of The Church (in general.)  It’s gotten a bad rap.  Some say “it’s too Commercial, too Business, too Entertainment, too Political” and so on.  Maybe, but I wonder, “Isn’t it the best establishment from the book of Acts to a fallen world that we have?”  If you think about it, it is sort of a Buffet, right or wrong.  I go, I look, and I choose.  I choose what is right according to the Word of God.  It is different flavors and different kinds in the Church.  I think of what Paul said,

Phil 1:18
18 What then? Notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. KJV

So what makes the Day, the Lord’s Day?  It is the choice of true Worship to our Lord and it’s the fellowship as Christians to one another to appreciate the history we’ve had together and the anticipation of the future we will have with each other.  Embrace and Appreciate the CHURCH.
