Pastor Jerry and Angie Edmon and the Family Worship Center in Elgin, Texas have made a commitment to “Choose to be a Blessing for Life” and one way they have been able to do that is through community outreach programs. Probably the favorite one is the “Backpack Outreach.” This year will be our 5th year to do this outreach and it just gets bigger and better every year. In 2004 we decided to try to find a need in our community and see what we as a church family could do to make an impact. We are blessed to have lots of families here at FWC so we are well aware of the challenges that they face in meeting the needs of their kids when it is time to get back to school supplies.
According to a study by the Children’s Defense Fund, only 12 percent of children nationwide who need help are getting any assistance. We had found a need we could fill! That first year we were able to provide 100 backpacks, filled to the brim with school supplies, to the children in our community. Since then it has grown to 500 backpacks each year and a large quantity of supplies to the middle and high schools. We look forward to meeting all those children and their families, praying with them and helping them be able to show up for the first day of school with their heads held high…ready to learn. It isn’t enough just to tell people that God loves them, we want to show them what that looks like.
The blessing of Abraham was not just to get a blessing, but to be a blessings. We are taking the light and the love of Jesus Christ into our community. We hope you join us!
